A four-blade, twin-engine attack chopper with reverse-tricycle landing gear, the AH-64 Apache was developed by Hughes Helicopters for the U.S. Army’s Advanced Attack Helicopter program, replacing the AH-1 Cobra. In its cockpit designed for two, the crew sits tandem in an armored compartment – the pilot above and behind the gunner. Both this compartment and the fuel tanks are armored to maintain flight even after taking damage from 23 mm gunfire. The Apache relies on systems solutions from Curtiss-Wright Controls for the helicopter threat warning system that alerts the crew when enemy radar targets the aircraft.
